今川義元(Imagawa Yoshimoto)-이마가와 요시모토

今川 義元（いまがわ よしもと）は、戦国時代の駿河国及び遠江国の守護大名・戦国大名。今川氏第11代当主。姉妹との婚姻関係により、武田信玄や北条氏康とは義理の兄弟にあたる。「海道一の弓取り」の異名を持つ東海道の広大な地域の支配者。「桶狭間(おけはざま)の戦い」で織田信長に敗れ死没る。

Yoshimoto Imagawa was the guardian daimyo of Suruga and Totomi during the Warring States period. He is the 11th head of the Imagawa clan. Due to his marital relationship with his sister, Shingen Takeda and Hojo Ujiyasu are brother-in-law. He is the ruler of the vast area of Tokaido, nicknamed “The No. 1 Yumitori-shiki on the Kaido”. He is defeated by Nobunaga Oda in the “Battle of Okehazama” and dies.

誕生、永正16年（1519年）～死没、永禄3年5月19日（1560年6月12日）

生い立ち(Upbringing)

Yoshimoto Imagawa was born in 1519 (Eishō 16) as the third son of Ujichika Imagawa. Since he already had two older brothers, he was entrusted to Taigen Sekkai at the age of four and studied with him in Yamashiro Province, where he took his vows and became a monk.

1536年（天文5年）、同日にふたりの兄が死去して今川義元が今川家当主となりました。

In 1536 (5th year of Astronomy), two older brothers died on the same day, and Yoshimoto Imagawa became the head of the Imagawa family.

天文5年（1536年）に長男の氏輝が急死する。兄の彦五郎がいたために継承権はなかったが、彦五郎までもが氏輝と同日に死亡したために継承権が巡ってきた。

1537年（天文6年）、今川義元は甲斐国（現在の山梨県）守護「武田信虎」（たけだのぶとら）の娘を正室に迎え、武田氏と縁戚関係をつくり、武田氏と同盟を結んだ。しかし、武田氏との同盟は、皮肉にも以前から同盟関係にあった相模（現在の神奈川県）の北条氏を刺激してしまい争いになりました。In 1537 (Tennō 6), Imagawa Yoshimoto married the daughter of Takeda Nobutora, the guardian of Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture), as his principal wife, forming a family relationship with the Takeda clan and concluding an alliance with them. However, the alliance with the Takeda clan ironically provoked the Hōjō clan of Sagami (present-day Kanagawa Prefecture), with whom he had previously been allied, leading to conflict.

1545年（天文14年）には、今川氏と和睦をする。

In 1545, he made peace with Mr. Imagawa.

武田氏にも援軍を出してもらい、占領された富士川以東を奪い返すべく、北条氏を包囲。北条氏は占領していた富士川以東を返す条件で和睦し、北条氏の脅威から解放された。With reinforcements from the Takeda clan, they surrounded the Hojo clan in order to recapture the area east of the Fujikawa River that had been occupied. The Hojo clan agreed to a truce on the condition that they return the area east of the Fujikawa River that they had occupied, and the threat from the Hojo clan was eliminated.

領国拡大（territorial expansion）

今川義元は、本格的に三河制圧に乗り出します。

1548年（天文17年）、織田氏は三河に兵を出してきましたが、今川義元はこれを破り、これ以降、三河は今川氏の支配下に入り、今川義元は、駿河・遠江・三河三国を領国とする大名になりました。　In 1548 (Tennō 17), the Oda clan sent troops to Mikawa, but Imagawa Yoshimoto defeated them, and from then on, Mikawa came under the control of the Imagawa clan. Imagawa Yoshimoto became a daimyō ruling over the three provinces of Suruga, Totomi, and Mikawa.

甲相駿三国同盟終結（End of the Kōshū-Sagami Three-Country Alliance）

天文23年（1554年）、嫡子・今川氏真に北条氏康の娘を縁組し、武田氏・北条氏と互いに婚姻関係を結んで甲相駿三国同盟を結成した。これにより後顧の憂いを断った。

三国同盟を結んだことで、武田氏・北条氏の脅威が薄れた今川義元が目指したのは、尾張侵攻へと。

In 1554, he arranged a marriage between his eldest son, Ujizane, and the daughter of Ujitsuna Hojo, forming a marriage alliance between the Takeda and Hojo clans and establishing the Kōshū-Sagami Three Nations Alliance. This eliminated any concerns about future threats.

With the Three Nations Alliance in place and the threat from the Takeda and Hojo clans diminished, Yoshimoto Imagawa set his sights on invading Owari.

桶狭間の戦い(Battle of Okehazama)

今川軍は、永禄3年（1560年）5月には那古野城を目指し駿・遠・三の2万余の軍を率いて尾張国への侵攻を開始、桶狭間（おけはざま）山で休息中に、5,000人程度織田信長の攻撃を受け討ち取られてしまいました。

Imagawa Yoshimoto’s large army of about 25,000 people was attacked by about 2,000 soldiers in Dengaku-Hasama, and Yoshimoto was decapitated. “Battle of Okehazama”

今川氏の衰退(Imagawa’s decline)

今川義元の死をきっかけに今川氏と武田氏の関係が悪化しました。1568年（永禄11年）には「武田信玄」が同盟を破棄し駿河侵攻を開始。そして、今川氏は滅亡してしまいます。今川義元の死後わずか9年のことでした。

The relationship between Mr. Imagawa and Mr. Takeda deteriorated after the death of Yoshimoto Imagawa. In 1568 (Eiroku 11), “Takeda Shingen” abandoned the alliance and started the invasion of Suruga. And Mr. Imagawa will be destroyed. It was only nine years after Yoshimoto Imagawa’s death.
