日本の歴史（にほんのれきし）において、15世紀末から16世紀末にかけて戦乱が頻発した時代区分である。世情の不安定化によって室町幕府の権威が低下したことに伴って、守護大名に代わって全国各地に戦国大名が台頭した。領国内の土地や人を一円支配する傾向を強めるとともに、領土拡大のため他の大名と戦闘を行うようになった。こうした戦国武将(大名)による支配体制が現れた。
