　現存の城は室町時代末期以降、特に松永久秀が多聞山城や信貴山城を築いた頃や、織田信長が岐阜城や安土城を築城した頃に発生したと考えられている。その後豊臣秀吉により大坂城や伏見城などが築かれ、重層な天守や櫓、枡形虎口を伴う城門に代表される、現在見られるような「日本の城」が完成しました。

姫路城 (Himeji castle)

姫路城（ひめじじょう）は、兵庫県姫路市にある日本の城。江戸時代初期に建てられた天守や櫓等の主要建築物が現存し、国宝や重要文化財に指定されている。また、主郭部を含む中堀の内側は「姫路城跡」として国の特別史跡に指定されている。また、ユネスコの世界遺産リストにも登録され、日本100名城などに選定されている。別名は白鷺城（はくろじょう・しらさぎじょう）とも言われています。

熊本城 (Kumamoto Castle)

熊本城（くまもとじょう）は、肥後国飽田郡熊本（現在の熊本県熊本市中央区）に築かれた安土桃山時代から江戸時代の日本の城。別名「銀杏城（ぎんなんじょう）」。

　加藤清正が中世城郭を取り込み改築した平山城で、加藤氏改易後は幕末まで熊本藩細川家の居城だった。

2016年（平成28年）4月14日21時26分以降発生している最大震度7の熊本地震の前震と本震（4月16日）など、相次ぐ揺れで被災した、現在も修復工事が行われる。
